Double Pendulums: Circling Around the Four Corners of the Body Universe.
In this dance class we will study the unique feature of circular movement as it relates to a pendulum. In general, a pendulum is a weight suspended from a fixed support with a frictionless pivot point. When the pendulum is displaced from the resting point, it swings back and forth under the influence of gravity. One full back and forth swing is called the period, which is dependent on: the length of the arm, the mass at the end of the arm, the starting angle when the arm is displaced and gravity. We’ll dance discovering single and double pendulums using pelvis/leg and torso/arm connections. The sequentiality of the pendulum swings, their periods, and exchange of energy between distal and proximal masses highlight the many contributions to explore in our movement. We’ll embrace the articular shape of hip and shoulder joints; consider the intersection between stability and elasticity; as well as sense into ones individual swing period according to limb proportions while accessing the desired momentum.
