Feeling Fat: Reclaiming our Fat Bodies Through Creative Embodiment with KT Kusmaul
February 19th-MArch 26th // Sunday 6:30pm-8pm
$90-$120 for the 6 week series // REGISTER HERE
This class is based on the last 5 years of deep exploration of what it means to create meaningful movement that is unique to fat bodies. This is the process I explored with the cast of Weighted Bodies. I have deep gratitude for all of their meaningful contributions to my own learning and the process of creating that performance. I'm also bringing in the research I've done with other art makers, movement artist, community builders, and somatic leaders. I hope you will feel the depth and breadth of this exploration in your own experience in this class.
We will deeply feel into our fat bodies through embodiment exploration and creative movement. We will practice deepening into the sensations in our bodies and how to perceive and honor that somatic wisdom. I’ll guide you into exploring how your body moves, not despite your fatness, but fully embracing your fat. We are going to get curious about jiggles and folds, the momentum and gravity of fat bodies.
This class could be for you if:
-You want to unpack the ways our bodies are holding messages of fat phobia and find a new way to relate to your physical being
-You intellectually understand fat liberation, but you want to deepen your embodied and felt experience of it.
-You saw Weighted Bodies and felt compelled to explore your own body in this way
-You want to be more connected to your body exactly as it is, including your fat, not despite it.
This won’t be a dance class, and there won’t be choreography to learn. But you will feel the familiar elements of a Body Home class like a warm and inviting space and connection with community. It will be a smaller class with opportunities to process and share our experiences. Because of the intimacy of this group, I ask that if you sign up that you strongly intend to attend most classes.
Please reach out to ask me more about this class! Since it’s a new offering I want to share all about it and answer your questions.
Infection Safety: Masks and vaccinations are required. The space is large and has two air filters. There will occasionally be movement or conversation with others that will bring you in close proximity to each other. Participants must cancel if they have an illness.
Accessibility: This studio is in an old industrial building, so I will try to detail any anticipated issues. Reach out with specific questions. There are no stairs required to access the studio. There are two small indoor ramps. To get to the door of the building you must park on the street and then enter through a parking lot that has a steep grade. Bathrooms are gender neutral, single person use, and about 50 yards from the studio. The studio is not dedicated scent free but I have not been aware of any chemicals or scents in the space. Directions for the class will allow for a great deal of interpretation since this is not choreography. For example there may be opportunities to lay on the ground, but you could opt to sit in a chair or lean against a wall instead. Or you could do much of the class from the floor. There will not be any movements that require you to move quickly between positions, so you will have ample time to get up from the ground. There will be a few chairs and stools, but if you want to be certain there will be something appropriate to support you please let me know. Class will be lead in English and I do not currently have strategies to adapt it to non-hearing people, but I am open to discussing options if you reach out.
