PERMISSION // PRACTICE is a space to generate community performance tools for survival co-facilitated by Laurel Butler (PostMan) + Paris Hurley (OBJECT AS SUBJECT). A series of punk rock rituals of togetherness, independence, and interdependence, the three hour body + voice based workshop moves between set material and rigorous improvisation to generate processes and scores for radical embodiment asking: How do we take space and make space — physically, sonically, and energetically — in order to create what we need and be together in and through radically transformative times?

PERMISSION // PRACTICE utilizes elements from the creative practices of feminist art-punk band, OBJECT AS SUBJECT, and future-speculative dark-pop chanteuse, PostMan to go into the body, the voice, and the community to generate new states of being: states of power, states of hard + soft, states of polished + raw, states of transcendence, and states of realness. Held within + outside of the reality of present-day systemic collapse, PERMISSION // PRACTICE invites us to excavate + heal, to keen + lament the past, to generate fiercely powerful visions of the future, and to transmute scarcity myths into radical truths.

PERMISSION // PRACTICE is geared towards folx looking to explore practices of embodiment and vocalizing whether or not you consider yourself a performer or intend to utilize these tools for creating performance or performing. An explicitly queer and feminist space, PERMISSION // PRACTICE invites folx interested in investigating messy, raw, wild, imperfect, permissive, loud, free, brave, vulnerable, irreverent ways of creating performance work together, to explore the roles that we inhabit and work towards making space for all bodies + voices to be seen and to be heard. Come ready to move, sing, and scream. Bring something to write on + with. Large drums provided.

BIOS:

LAUREL BUTLER (PostMan) is an educator, facilitator, organizer, and multidisciplinary performance artist currently based in Los Angeles, where she is the Performing Arts Specialist for the Los Angeles County Office of Education and director/producer of the ACT TWO Performance Project. From 2016 to 2018, Laurel taught on Faculty in the World Arts and Cultures/Dance Department of the UCLA School of Art and Architecture, where she served as Associate Director of the Visual and Performing Arts Education Program. Laurel is the lead singer and songwriter behind PostMan, as well as the former lead singer of Cassandra (Los Angeles) and Lady Stardust (San Francisco), a founding member of The Royal Frog Ballet performance collective, and the founder/curator of the Sharon is Karen work-in-progress salon. Her performance work has premiered at REDCAT NOW, the International Home Theater Festival, the Revolutions International Theater Festival, CounterPULSE, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and the Women's Center for Creative Work. Laurel creates works of performance ranging from dark and mystical song cycles to radical glam rock spectacles to fiercely political community-based collaborations with formerly incarcerated and system-impacted youth. Her work is always about liberation.

PARIS HURLEY (OBJECT AS SUBJECT) is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, dancer, and choreographer based in Los Angeles. A classically trained violinist of 30 years turned punk singer, her work is raw, loud, defiant, and refined, ranging from large-scale dance theater works, rock / string quartet / orchestral shows, and gallery installations, to performances + workshops for incarcerated youth. Paris is the creator, artistic director, composer, and frontwoman of OBJECT AS SUBJECT, a feminist art punk band fueled by raw wailing vocals, a barrage of floor toms, gritty bass riffs, and exacting choreography that shifts from explicit gestural iterations to relentless phrases of wild abandon. From 2009-2016, her dance theater work was presented in Seattle at On the Boards, CityArts Fest, the Henry Art Gallery, the Northwest Film Forum, Velocity Dance Center, Seattle Center, Seattle University’s Hedreen Gallery, Project: Space Available, and the James Washington Foundation as she toured extensively throughout Europe as a violinist with Seattle-based Balkan rockers, Kultur Shock. She has since brought OBJECT AS SUBJECT to music venues throughout LA, releasing the project’s first record, PERMISSION, in 2018.
